2019 Louisiana State Legislature Election Results

Louisiana State Legislature Elections 2019

This is what you need to know about the 2019 Louisiana State Legislature election results.

Both houses of the Louisiana State Legislature are controlled by Republicans. This is no surprise in 2019, given that this is a red state and most of the Blue Dog Democrats left for the GOP a long time ago. While it appears nothing will come along and change that, we could see a Democratic governor get re-elected in the Pelican State. These races are important as this is the legislature the new governor will face.

Every legislative seat in Louisiana is listed below with geographical cues. We have broken them up into five different regions, which are:

  • North Louisiana/”Sportsman’s Paradise”
  • Central Louisiana
  • Cajun Country/Acadiana
  • Plantations
  • Greater New Orleans

Last Time: 2015 Louisiana State Legislature Election Results

Louisiana Senate

Louisiana Senate composition pre 2019 election

Louisiana’s Senate has 39 members, and 20 seats are required for a majority. Following the 2015 election, Republicans held 25 seats and Democrats 14. Democrats had a Senate majority in Louisiana for over 130 years until 2011, when Republicans took control for the first time since Reconstruction; the GOP has been in power since then.1 As recently as 1983, Democrats held all 39 seats in the Senate.2

The term for Louisiana’s state senators is four years; these elections occur on the same year as the gubernatorial election.

Louisiana House of Representatives

Louisiana House composition pre 2019 election

In the 2015 state legislative elections, Republicans won 61 seats in the House of Representatives. The Democrats took 42 while two independents were also elected.

Louisiana is a rarity in American politics in that the State House of Representatives does not have a two-year term. Rather, state representatives also have four-year terms like the Senate.
