2021 Newfoundland and Labrador Election Results: Overall
Instant Results Reaction
For the Liberals, this election victory will taste sweet after such a long wait, but expect there to be somewhat of a mixed reaction.
The good news for the Liberals and Andrew Furey:
- They won a majority government despite an extended campaign and subsequent tank in the polls.
- They knocked off both opposition party leaders Ches Crosbie (PC) and Alison Coffin (NDP), a rarity in provincial politics.
As for the bad news:
- Had the election happened on schedule in February, the Liberals might have been looking at something closer to 30 seats. This is a steep drop-off from expectations.
- There are likely to be legal challenges of the results related to voters not being able to get ballot access.
The Progressive Conservatives will need to replace their leader as it’s not likely that Ches Crosbie will continue. That leader, however, will be left with a better electoral scenario with 13 seats than could have been expected a month or two ago.
