Ben Robbins (R) won the special election to the Alabama House of Representatives on January 19, 2021. Read all the particulars of the race below.
33rd District Special Election 2021: Key Facts
PREVIOUSLY HELD BY: Ronald Johnson (R-Sylacauga), who was first elected in 1978 before his passing in July 2020.1 Johnson was the Dean of the House at the time of his death.
LOCATION: The 33rd District lies to the southeast of Birmingham, incorporating parts of Coosa, Talladega, and Clay Counties. Its major municipalities include Sylacauga, Lincoln, and Fayetteville.
POLITICAL COMPOSITION: This is a very Republican seat, and not just because it’s been won by Johnson for decades. Donald Trump, for example, won all three counties forming a part of this district in landslides in 2020. Kay Ivey, the state’s Republican governor, also won all three counties by comfortable margins.
WHO’S RUNNING: The candidates are Fred Crum (D-Sylacauga) and Ben Robbins (R-Sylacauga). Crum was a replacement candidate for the Democrats after their prior nominee, Terra Foster, dropped out of the race. Robbins, an attorney2, sought this seat in 2018 and nearly defeated Johnson in the Republican primary, falling by a 52 to 48-percent margin.
Alabama House of Representatives
The House of Representatives in Alabama has been firmly in Republican control for the past decade. In what has become a solid red state, the GOP has a 76 to 28 majority in the House, with this one vacancy.
Alabama’s House of Representatives is one of the few legislative bodies in America that elects its members to four-year terms. The House will stand for election as a whole in 2022.
Alabama House of Representatives 33rd District Special Election: Evaluation
Expect the GOP to hang on here, which is why we rate the race as Safe Republican. Elections in the 33rd District on the Alabama House level have not been competitive in ages, but at higher levels, they tend not to be, either.
Allow a slim Democratic chance given that it’s a special election and turnout is likely to be very small. Nothing more than a remote chance, however.
