Massachusetts Special Election Results

Voters went to the polls on Tuesday to elect a new state representative in the 19th Suffolk District of the Massachusetts House. On his way to Beacon Hill will be Jeff Turco (D), who defeated Paul Caruccio (R) and Rich Fucillo (I). Turco succeeds Bob DeLeo (D), who was Speaker of the House in Massachusetts for over a decade before stepping down late last year.

In the final results, Turco won with 66 percent of the vote. Fucillo, the independent, clipped Caruccio for second place.

This was the 10th state legislative special general election of 2021 so far. Democrats have won six of those races, while Republicans have won four. No seats have changed hands yet.

Alabama Special Legislative Primary Results

There were two legislative primaries in Alabama on Tuesday as well. In the Alabama Senate, District 14 (last held by Republican Cam Ward) handed April Weaver a landslide win in the GOP primary. This Senate district is located in areas to the south of Birmingham, including Alabaster. She will face Democrat Virginia Applebaum in the general election; she was unopposed for the Democratic nomination.

Meanwhile, in House District 73, previously represented by Matt Fridy (R), the Republicans here will go to a runoff. Leigh Hulsey and Kenneth Paschal were the top two finishers, though both well under 50 percent of the vote. The 73rd partially overlaps the 14th Senate District, taking in places like Pelham and Alabaster. Sheridan Black (D) advanced to the general election unopposed.

While the runoff in HD-73 will take place on April 27, the general elections for both will be on July 13.

2020 Election Lawsuits Still Proceeding in Michigan

Did you know that it’s almost April 2021, and there are still lawsuits about the 2020 presidential election percolating around the United States? It’s true, and that comment is pointed at the Great State of Michigan. A Michigander by the name of William Bailey launched the suit against Antrim County, one that originally looked to be in Joe Biden’s column, but where a corrected clerical error flipped it to Donald Trump. Bailey has claimed, for lack of a better term, that the election was rigged. Now, there are subpoenas being served to various elections clerks across Michigan demanding a full investigation into the election in certain counties.1

Slovakia Prime Minister Resigns

Igor Matovic is out as Slovakia’s prime minister, resigning yesterday. He was barely in office for a year after having won the 2020 parliamentary elections. Matovic was no stranger to controversy during his brief premiership, but it was a COVID-19 scandal that did him in this week. His government surreptitiously worked out a deal with Russia to acquire its homemade vaccine, despite it not being approved by the European Union, nor did his parliamentary coalition partners stand in favor.2

Eduard Heger will take over as the nation’s new prime minister.

Palestinian Ruling Party Faces Electoral Split

In the upcoming Palestinian Authority elections, notable Fatah figure Marwan Barghouti has decided to run on his own ticket. The net result of this could be a split of the ruling party’s vote, which will hurt the efforts of incumbent Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.3 The presidency of the Authority has been in some dispute, but any challenge to the rule of the party of Arafat and Abbas will be noted throughout the region.
